Experience
This Youth Mentor program is something we have already been doing at our ranch. We are in our 4th year of presenting a Youth Alpaca Camp for ages 10-17. This is a 3-4 day (1/2 days each day) workshop type event where we teach alpaca basics, handling, showing/obstacles, healthcare and farm maintenance, and even fiber education. This year's camp is scheduled for Jun 14-17. Many of our camp's youth have shown for us at our local alpaca show, AOK Alpaca Blastoff, held the 2nd week in November. We also have a volunteer program for both adults and youth (ages 10+), many of whom have handled our alpacas and trained them on obstacles. We have even had some special needs kids show and/or work with our alpacas. We have some alpacas who just seem to "know" that their handler needs special care and attention...so heartwarming. We would love to be a part of your program. ~ Terri Bates
Expectations
We feel it is important that future and new alpaca owners know as much as possible about these sweet creatures. This is why we invite youth to our annual camp and to join our volunteer program. Some of our volunteers and camp attendees now have their own alpacas and keep learning from us and other members of our local organization, Alpacas of Oklahoma. We also love educating the public and sharing our love of alpacas. A youth/family who might partner with us should expect us to provide as much education and 'hands-on" experience as possible, preparing them for their future herd. We will be very helpful and will instill the importance of "knowing" the alpaca and its special needs.
